This Week in Gearhead History: On March 1st, 1986, the first Shelby GLH-S was produced! (Goes Like Hell)
It started life as a lowly Dodge Omni hatchback before Carroll Shelby and his team got their hands on it.
If you look at this car as something Carroll Shelby did, you might be thinking, did he lose his mind?
No. It was the 80’s: most every automobile manufacturer had lost their mind and was determined to build slow, ugly cars.
Carroll Shelby, with his typical defiance, took one of those ugly cars and outran the high dollar exotics with it.
This started a slow re-birth in performance cars that ultimately led to the Vipers, Camaros, Mustangs, and Hellcats we enjoy today.
In some ways this car was even more important than the Cobra.
Yes, James you are correct in that they added a 4-barrel to the smogged-out 2 bbl to give the 3000lb. 5.0 litre EFI Mustang 200 Horsepower in 1986.I don't know who wrote the above, but I find it laughable that anyone would try & proclaim that a LOW PRODUCTION FWD 4 cyl car was largely responsible for the re-birth of the performance car? (Not knocking it's level of performance, just the claims being made)
By March 5, 1986 the Fox Body Mustang was into it's SEVENTH YEAR of production, and had morphed from a neutered car with a smogged out 2bbl 5.0L car into a car with 5.0L 4bbl engine, with a T-5 manual trans. These cars had a following from day one, affordable, light, and an ever growing amount of aftermarket support!
And by 1986 model year had an EFI 5.0L engine, and when ford released the 5.0L "LX" version, which was very affordable, things really took off.
Magazines dedicated to modding these cars, the "Fastest 5.0 Shootouts", etc only added fuel to the flames. And these cars are still sought after as a base to build performance cars from, despite the last year of Fox Body Mustang being the 1993 Model year, which is now 31 years ago........
There's a lot more to what happened back then, and it didn't happen strictly because of any one Brand, or Model of car, but the Fox Mustang absolutely played a large role in that resurgence............
James
That model was/is from Mexico. A few made it across the border into Arizona of all places.
