1961 PV544 Project - Update 13
It was pretty much a "no brainer" that the entire rear end would need to be updated to upgrade brakes and to accommodate the additional power of the V6. And, like the front, it needed to be lowered.
Below: The original rear end and suspension. Essentially a Dana Spicer centre, stamped trailing arms, coil springs, tube shocks, panhard bar and an anti-torque swing arm mounted to the body.
Below: The rear end area stripped and ready to go. The arrow points to right trailing arm bracket. Because of the inherent strength built into this area, this location will be reused.
Below: Looking forward from rear of car. Upper left arrow is the original shock pocket, the upper right arrow is the original panhard bracket and, once again, the botton arrow points to the right, existing, trailing arm bracket.
Below: New narrowed rear end, coilover shocks and panhard roughed in. The rear housing is '65 Mustang-style 9" Ford which is not as tall as the '67+ style.
Below: Schwartz-fabbed trailing links in progress (cross tie to be added yet).
Below: Detail of panhard bracket at left (moved from right side) and coilover bracket tied to crossmember.
Below: Trailing arm brackets reused but widened to accept larger bushed end. Arrow points to inside tab of bracket which was relocated inward.
Below: Overall view
Below: Rear brakes are 11"Ford drums
