In 1957, the torsion-bar era began at Chrysler. Clever engineering.
It was also utilized in many 53-56 Effie front suspension conversions, the only issue was the engine had to be offset slightly because of the massive Chryco sterring box.

It also allowed easy adjustment and leveling of ride height without a change to the spring rate. Common now on 4WD vehicles.
 
If you had to replace the front rubbers and had problems getting them out, just loosen the nut off to nearly off and then reverse the car and hit the brakes and the rubbers would pop out making the job so much easier. I found that out when I had to change some rubbers on a friends Valiant.
