When you look at the engines from the 50s even the valve covers were a work of art…not just plain stamped steel of today. I’m guessing the cost of designing and making these were a large contributing factor as to why they just went to a generic cover for each manufacturer. Old stuff is just classy…

The venerable Meyer Drake Offenhauser engine with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder was the hot setup in champ car racing for over 40 years.
The block and head are all a one piece casting, no head gasket to blow.
No other engine was successful for so long a period. It's a thing of beauty.

The 1st Hemi by Ford
1943-1000 CI
Mainly used as a tank engine.

The hemi design has been out forever in fact.
In 1907 Fiat was tired of the French ruling the racetrack, so they obtained the help of designer Giovanni Enrico.
Under the supervision of Carlo Cavalli, an engine designed for power and speed was built.
They used a four-cylinder engine with Hemi heads and produced a racecar that could push out 130 horses.
Chryco was just smart enough to trademark it and name it the for the Chrysler 300 and now it's a synonymous with mopars

Just every engine in this picture made 650+ HP, two of them 950+ HP in the late 60s .
