airbag safety

going to be stripping down a parts car that is equipped with airbags just wondering how to safely work with them? do they run off the battery? unhook the battery and that makes them ?inert or can they be set off other ways?

Generally just disconnecting the battery is enough to render them safe. Some higher end vehicles use a capacitor that holds a charge for up to 30 minutes to activate the bags if the electrical system fails. I would disconnect the battery go have a beer then take the car apart. Always stay away from the danger area of the air bags in case they do activate. The steering wheel bag can be removed by taking out screws in the back side of the steering wheel. There is a small wire connector that just unplugs from the back of the airbag module. They do have a lot of power when they go off. They will shoot a cinder block 30 feet in the air if you set one off on the ground. That would punch anyones lights out.
