Ford 460 help

Hi guys, was helping my father tune his 460 yesterday. We were trying to set the timing, when we encountered an issue. We had moved the distributor to where the motor was idling properly, however as soon as he tightened it down it started idling very roughly. It's gotten to the point to where the engine will barely idle.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I am by no means a tune up expert, but did you disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor prior to setting the timing??

We tried that, but to no avail. Roughly a year ago the distributor rotor came apart, we replaced the rotor and it was fine. It's been sitting for the last several months, running fine before we parked it.

Distributor bushings worn like tumbleweeds link suggests. Especially if the rotor just "came" apart. It probably clipped the inside of the cap and broke apart.
Rebuilds are pretty cheap from Lordco, Napa, etc.....

Update.

The distributor was indeed the culprit, and has since been completely replaced with a new unit. Just in time for the annual fishing trip too.

Thanks for the update.
Far too many times "we" don't hear if the problem got repaired.
