Starter motor shims.

I put a new aftermarket SFI rated flex plate in the 47 as part of my vibration reduction effort. I have started the car a few times and noticed the bendix starter gear is only engaging about 1/16” into the ring gear teeth. I had no shims in originally. The gap between the top land of the starter gear and the bottom land of the ring gear was just over 1/8”. I read on line that it should be between 30 and 60 thou. I have put 45 thou of shims under the outer starter motor mounting bolt and this has reduced that gap to just over 60 thou. My question is: is 45 thou of shims under one bolt too much? It seems like a lot to me but I don’t know of an alternate solution to aligning the starter motor properly. The starter motor is an OEM reman (ie not a mini starter) The smaller one for the 168 tooth (14”) ring gear. Any comments would be appreciated.
