Flathead starter question

I have my starter apart for cleaning. I now need to know how to get four spring loaded brushes out of the way to drop the armature back in. I have seen this done several times in the past but can’t recall the technique. I can’t get past the notion that the job would be easy if only I had five hands.

Hum, my memory is not good enough to recall flatty stuff, but on newer (?) starters a hook type tool to lift and hold the brush springs while positioning the brushes above the armature and then lowing/jamming the springs onto the side of the brushes to hold them up and then installing armature?

There is a section describing how to hold back the brushes enabling one to fit the armature. It seems a little vague, but I don't have a starter in hand to try this.
