going out of my mind

good day guys, im trying to find a good set of heads for my 350, some tell me to go with aluminun and others tell me cast, i want to have high revs out of my engine as its going in a mud bogger, and i only have three grand to built the whole engine, anyone have a tip or two on how i can make cheap horsepower? i cant do a cold air intake as it will just suck in mud and water, i wanna be competitive or theres no use going.....thanks
 
Seek out your local circle track racers....some classes have "claimer" rules, which means they have to built on a budget, or risk somone else ending up with your big $$ engine. For High RPM, I would be running forged pistons, and I know that RHS makes some very good (ie: flow well) cast iron SBC heads that are very affordable.......

I don't know anything about 'bogs but it seems that wheel speed and the ability to maintain it are paramount. If that be so, then, perhaps you may be better off to build a torque monster with a taller final drive rather than a screemin' demon built for HP with a shorter final drive. High RPM (depending on your definition of high RPM, I'm thinking >9000) is costly to build and failures are usually catastrophic. Also, a torque monster would be more forgiving should your tires get better that expected purchase or you choose the wrong gear, assuming a standard trans. Just a thought.

I have run a set of Dart Iron Eagle heads on my 27 roadster with mixed results.... After my first run across Canada in 03 I got home to California and had two junk exhaust guides. I had them all replaced, then they started "grabbing" valves and bending them... guides were set too tight. All that is straightened out now, but pay very close attention to how these heads are set up. I was told I probably ran too much ignition timing (yup, been known to squeeze it a bit) which produced high exhaust tract temps.
One thing about Dart heads... they do make power. They are all freshened up and will go back on the 27 this winter.

Vortec Heads = Cheap Horsepower
If you're building a low RPM torque monster-you won't have a high lift cam
That means no spring pocket machine work or changing out to stiffer valve springs-Lots of Intake manifold choices for your RPM range-yes it must be Vortec specific but not significantly more expensive(some are the same price)
just my 2cents-Easy to get at the 'auto recyclers' or buy new.

as a circle track racer it has been my experience that unless you spend lots of glue on real good stuff anything past about 6000rpm for a long time is goin to shorten the life span substantially.i tried to build my motors with good iron heads and a cam built for torque with very good results.the old camel bumps were very good.i also tried some mud boggin with an old chevy with a tall deck 427 stock.it would pull the sky down at 3500 rpm pass after pass and never broke.it was on propane and i tuned it to pull it was awsome!!
 
Wow! Lots of great info here. I'm pondering my Dad's old 400 small block and trying to decide what to do. How do you decide with all those choices? I talked to a friend who works for World products and he's an old racer who's done everything and knows everyone and he says for the street he likes a good cast iron head. Heat is horsepower and he says the cast iron heads will hold the heat more. On the other hand I've heard aluminum heads will allow you to go up a point or so in compression and not have to worry about detonation. I ran some cast Dart Sportsman heads on my pro street Deuce pickup a few years ago and was quite happy with them. I'm thinking this 400 will become a 406 and use aluminum Vortecs. This is going to go into a street rod or maybe a small S10 type pickup that will be mostly street driven but see the drag strip on occasion. Once I get the car it's going into I'll decide on what cam and intake to use I guess.
