Hey guys... i found through the usual channels 2 mills available... one is a '78 460 in a lincoln, comes in a running driving car, the other is a 390, in a 4 door 1973 montego station wagon, probably not running... the guy has no idea. I'm thinking the mill would get over hauled anyways, so not running isn't a big deal.
as far as stock power.... I'm sure the 460 would have more.... but on the other hand its a late 70's.... smog and pollution controll and lower preformance... the 390, early 70's.... probably not detuned and lots of torque to get that big pig movin... what do you guys think?

price wise.. prob $500 for the linc, and less than $200 for the montego

Having owned a 390,429,460...Do the 390 I had mild one in a 67 Fairlane GTA,The car was quick...The 460 is a pig.although the make monster torque.. I like the 429 I had better than the 460. I liked the 390 I had better than the 429 tho too LOL...I just like 390's I guess LOL

Oh ya and a 390 with a tri power set up is a classy looking engine

..77.

Can you build a decent performing 390 with low enuff compression to run on 2008 p%sswater gas .
even though the 460 was a stone . Bigger cubic inches means easier to make more power .
another thing I would throw into the equation is , which one is easier to mount up to an over drive trans . Most over drive trans have better accelerating gear ratio,s then non over drive trans do.
The better gear ratio spreads will allow the car to accelerate quicker ( meaning you can use an engine with weaker torque in a heavier car ) and the O/drive will make you happy on the highway .
Also I think carcrap mag did a 460 street engine with in the last year..77.

...460, trash the smog equipment, re-grind cam, buy shares in 'PetroCan', 'Haines' and 'Depends', 'cuz you're gonna fill your pants when you fill the tank........

Let talk about what your intentions are for the motor first and we will go from their...Are you gonna drag it of just some heavy street use?

My S-code Fairlane had the 390-335 HP...It was a great motor,it would rev and it had very good torque....Like I said I would do another 390 for the street before the 460. We use 460's in my friends pull truck....As for cost the 390 is a little cheaper I found

I intend on having it for street use only.... with a heavy foot of course. I'm sure the filling of the tank won't make me fill my pants, it won't get driven as much as my truck.... and that makes me fill my pants at $150 + a tank. This is all in preperation of doing a motor swap in the meteor , cause I don't think it will sell, and for me to keep it , its gonna get changed. it needs to be more along the lines of what I'm into now.

kustom shoe box the 390 is a kool motor and makes great power and torque . the problem with the 460 is they run a retarted timein set and make lots-O-torque .. but there is a trick .. order a later 60`s 429 timin set and use it , it advaces the cam timin .. get good power and torque and better milage .

Yeah I kinda thought that the 390 was a better choice... I have an artical that lists all the wieghts of the common motors, and the 460 was a fatty LOL

CSB, I have what sounds like must be a Lincoln FE, still not sure of size until I pull the pan off it but I'm guessing it's a 390, the engine had heaps of blow by and was in my Galaxie for a while and even with it being tired it still hauled alright (I'm going to be putting that into my A when I get around to it), nothing wrong with an FE engine. I have just sold my Galaxie which has a 352FE bored and balanced with all new old stock replacement parts in it and that hauled alright for a big car and towed my 33 around while I was building it up some pretty steep hills and never missed a beat. The FE engines still look good and perform well in any configuration. There is blow all difference in the height of a 390 con rod and a 352 I discovered but the 390 rods are a lot stroger by the look of them. I think from memory that had I put 390 rods in the 352 there would have been about 1/16" that the piston would have sat lower, I know there wasn't much in it.

56 effie on here has a 460 he is putting into a T bucket and I think that will manage to pull that T around alright:cool:

I have been considering getting an Edelbrock 3 twins or a 2 4's set up for that engine. The price of Gas here is around the $1.40/ltr and in New Zealand it is a lot higher but hey I don't think that will stop guys from still putting a big engine in a car.

Cheers, John

John... I think the price of gas here yesterday was $1.17/lt and $1.15 for diesel I dont think the prices are going to stop the real die hards from doing whatever they want LOL
