if you look at the "show us your mug thread" you will notice that most of the people in there are in their50,s and 60,s they probably built cars in there carports and under shade trees in their younger years and as time allowed they stepped up to better digs as money came avaliable.

Teen.... I've been dinking with cars since I was 13. A few years have gone by in the meantime. So yeah, my shop now is better than when I had the use of my parents' garage for the summer months only. However my monthly hotrod budget doesn't seem to have improved much.

Most of us started without very much......A lot of what you see on here is years of acumulation and a lot of work after the day's work was done.......I hit Prince George in March of nineteen seventy two with fifty-five cents split between three of us......The only thing I had was the ability to be able to do autobody work and had my interprovincial autobody papers......If you work at it it is all out there.........I was just lookin at how your spelling is doing and you have improved....

I think what teen is getting at, is that he sees alot of the members on here doing well, have nice cars, nice houses (garages), and going on trips we would and can only dream about. At least thats what I'm translating out of it. the monkey wrench anictdote (spelling) has not relavince.... .just a funny add-on. I feel for him... 6 years ago, I didnt have a pot to piss in as far as house/garage/car It takes time... and you only get as good as you can afford or what you work for. get through school/technical college, and get into your career... it will come with time. wanna speed it up? honestly don't get married or have kids right away... speaking from personal experience... I had the house and car first... then the wife and kids. if I started with wife and kids I wouldnt have the car for sure LOL

Thanks Mike, I would like to think you translated that very well.
I would also like to agree with the majority above, the way to get there takes a while, but it realy helps with some good schooling and the true desire to succeed at your goals.
Tinn, you had a garage to work in?? We had a bit more than FF, we had a carport;) Maybe this this was the limitation that slowed my collection (compared to FF and his acres)...:p:D

Well Teen, i am one of those "younger" fellas that doesn't have a lot change jingling in my pockets. I can make payments and i save my bottle money. I have the oldest kid that graduated and moved out so there is a little more at the end of each month. It takes time and if you EARN it....you'll like it that much more :D

I not getting any younger and my garage is 12x18 with a leaning wall and a cracked and chipped concrete floor. I am happier than before because I use to have a carport with a gravel floor. I have seen some people do some great work on their rides in their driveways and use a tarp over it when the weather is poor.

Don't use the lack of a shelter as as excuse to not do things. Use what you have, a be gratefull for what you have. I guess a person or your neighbours may not want to see a bunch of parts cars in your front yard if you live in the city however everything within reason is always best. No matter what you have most people will always want more. Make a person wonder what Jay Leno wants to improve to with a huge warehouse as a garage with his own maintainance and detailer team. I guess there is a limit to what a person wants.

Teen it is called hard work and a lot of it. I used to work on a stock car as well as build my rods on th egrass at my Mum and Dads place when I was a young punk. So, stay away from the tuff stickers (tattoos) and spend the money wisely on parts or a car you can do up yourself and then sell for a profit. You know when I was there in Canada I saw a lot of potential projects sitting around and couldn't help but think if only I lived here I would be able to build whatever I wanted.

From memory where you live going by your pictures there is a bit of space there you could park a donor car out of the way and just get stuck into building something. You will find that once other people see that you are keen then things will come to you, but if you start slacking off it will all turn to putty. Get yourself a realistic plan on what you would like to have as a drive car and get into it. The cost of cars or pickups over in your country are a gift, if you saw the prices we had to pay you would realise how easy it is for you.

So just get stuck in and start learning, oh yea one more thing, you can't be learning while you are telling someone about what little you know so learn to listen to who is tring to help you.

A pic of you in the show us your mug would be nice so we know who we are talking to.

All the best with it, John

I guess I'm somewhere in the middle, I'm 33 and just getting back into the car game. I played around with cars, etc in and after high school, then came the wife and kids and house, now I finally have something to work on again. I only have a 1 car attached garage, I would love a bigger one, but that would have meant another few years before I could aford a car or truck to work on. I am still on a nickle and dime budget though, it's frustrating watching friends order up hundreds of dollars of brand new parts whenever they need them. I'll be doing more scrounging and begging, but it will be worth it in the end.

So Teen ... you think your being "left behind."
(not able to go to Bonneville for example)

One thing you DO have is YOUTH! Time to listen, learn from others and watch and ask (intelligent) questions.

I'm old enough to be your GREAT GRANDFATHER! And I have only NOW begun to build a "rod" of my dreams.
(the "A" sat in storage on a gravel floor with a leaky roof for 34 YEARS!!)

Trying to earn a living, build a house, (myself) and ONLY 12 years ago was able to build a small (24 x 17 foot) heated shop. With an unheated 24 x 17 OPEN car port.
Slowly built a collection of tools, (it helped that I worked for a tool company for a while) and FINALLY start to do most (as much as I can) of the work myself.

Get your "butt" out to that pile of parts, and start pulling out the pieces you think you will use for YOUR DREAM!
Just "mocking" parts together will get the creative "ideas" going.

Oh, ... and skip the "tats"; money wasted IMHO.

I'm 21, graduated high school, have a college education and have NOTHING to show for it!

But I do own an old car, and I am always welcome to go back to the farm where I grew up to work on it, and am lucky enough to have my father there to help me with anything I get stuck on.

What I'm saying is, I have shit to show for my almost 22 years on earth, but what I do have I appreciate and am VERY thankfull for.

well teen I'm still one of those that has a 10x28 carport that has had three walls put up and cheeted the district by putting the 28 foot wall about three feet further out so's i can get around the car to work on it.
and I put back doors on it to get other juhk in the back yard when the shop don't have any cars in it

Same boat here. 24 and nothing to show for it but a piece-o-crap car that will die soon. I have a bit of a college 'edumacation', but even what I have isn't enough. I live with my grandparents, and am in the process of TRYING to get started on building a house with my bf. Getting started on that is very depressing because you really find out just how much you (aren't) worth. To be honest with you, I had a bit of a 'freak-out' session this morning because I feel like this house thing is hopeless. Then that makes me feel like a rod is hopeless. BUT, I also realize that this is just a bump in the road that I need to get over to be able to do what I want later. I know it sucks now, but later, once some money is saved and such, life will get better and a truck just may 'magically' appear on here on day! :D

What I'm trying to say is, hang in there man!

Usually that shoestring budget never goes away. You scour the swap meets for a deal on a part you might be able to use and make road trips looking for new projects. They are still out there too. It all takes time, sweat, and perseverance but you make progress one step at a time. It sometimes takes years to get a shop only to find how much it costs for the shop tools you need as well. This all takes time and that is why most of us now have grey hair.....

Maybe i can afford to pay for a lot of the work but i choose to try it myself and i think i bloody well deserve it.
As a kid i was too busy earning money for hobbies but saving up for a car so i didnt have to walk to school or work.

Don't feel bad teen. I'm 18, I've got a 52 that needs a lot of loving. I don't have a garage that the car can fit in to work on it. just a blue tarp and part of the driveway my parents said is mine. :D

other than that i try and save my pennies for some steel so i can start on a floor. as for fancy tools? not even close. I'll be attempting some floor, and body work with a hobby arc welder for the 70's.

progress will happen, and we have all the time on the world, you and me a quite young. i have people marvel that I'm so young, and have such ambitions, and love to keep learning about my love, cars.

A week after I graduated I was kicked out of my parents. come home after a night of good times and my stuff was on the porch:mad:. I lived with Henry j for a while till I got enough to move out on my own I was 17 years old! bought my first house at 19 and have owned two since then. I've had transportation of all makes and models as long as your arm, bought cheap fixed up a little and sold for more and sometimes less.(Good mechanical experience) I work in a sawmill so I dont make loads of cash (especialy as a apprentice!) and my parents have nothing so I didnt get anything from them! It's all about planning, budgeting, shear grit, heart and determination to succeed and work ethic!. You say you and your dad been trying to build a shop since 1995, (you were 4 years old) Thats 13 years. Must not want it bad enough! I built a 20' by 24' for $8700 complete not including drywall by myself! So its not that big of a reach, Thats with a kid at the time, Now I have two! The key to building a low cost project as others have said is planning and bugeting. But i am begining to learn (still young myself ...27) that the difference in build cost is based on when you need the parts! i know guys who have collected parts then build the car where time was not an issue. But if your like me and you get anxious or have a completion date in mind the cost to get parts is always more. the best deals come when you don't really need the part!

Don't rush it... do the rust repairs and as much of the body work you can while its out side. it takes alot of time but is not that expensive besides it's the messy work anyway, most of us will envy you because when the wind blows your workshop gets cleaned trust my shop needs a hurricane to clean it:D
