I'm surprised Cword hasn't jumped in on this one ...

http://1149.ca/

The "North of 49" is just a "shade" off the record for it's class. (B/STR)

The exit speed of 210.505 MPH (2006) is just a "hairs breath" away from the class record of 214.+ MPH so it SHOULD be there in all it's "finery !!"

A new engine; replacing the one that "lunched"; (loss of oil pressure) along with all the knowledge (fine tuning) gained over the past SIX years, should make this "puppy" a WINNER!!
(AND recipient of the coveted 200 MPH CLUB RED HAT!!)

Firstly, Lee, thanks for posting the photo of "Fred" the Ford.:)

Digger, we sure do hope to see Cword and Family at the Salt
competing in that car!!!:)

Hun? Isn't there supposed to be some "white stuff" somewhere in this picture??

For those who weren't at Bonneville last year; this is what you had to "WADE" through, to get to the pit area!

Then of course, there was the Boyd "Cotterpin" motor home fiasco!
Three tow trucks all mired up to the axles in the mud UNDER the salt crust trying to pull the motor home out.

Mike you could have gone for some Jet Boat and water ski records on that:).

Good luck this year to you and the crew Mike.

I just keep thinking about all that salt brine washing up underneath your rod............. anybody notice a bit of corrosion appearing a year later?

Corrosion, Yup!!
Took the 39 Chevy there 4 times. When you
leave you go to the car wash in Wendover and lie
on your back and spray all you can underneath.
Upon returning home, off come the wheels and spray
more. Some guys put sprinklers under their cars for
a couple of days.
Had some rust show up in the rear tail panel as a
result of our salty trips.:)

Keith, I often wonder how my 57 Ranchero body is doing these days after our trip there in 92. 57 fords are real rusters and the Rancheros were the worst. First day we got there the salt was a little wet and packed under the car like mud. Pat.

I won't be going this year. The salt takes its toll. I had to have the coupe disassembled and cleaned up this winter.

Every time I see a pic of that red / white Ford long roof I have to ask.
It didn't happen to be from Langley ? Bob MacDonald's wagon was identical, it had factory T-Bird running gear in it. MacDonald used it as a tow vehicle for his '32 Ford 3W, 406cu.in. alcohol blown dragster.

The dates for this year are ...

Bonneville Salt Flats
-----------------------
Speed Week
Aug 18-24
Inspection - Sunday Aug 17

World Finals
Oct 8 - 11

The BNI hosts a spectacular week of racing each year in August, which is the highlight event of the LSR season. Speed Week consists of six days of racing (Mon - Sun in 2008), weather and conditions permitting.

Entrants come from all over the world to participate in the week long event. Spectators are allowed to walk through the pits, view the vehicles, and talk to the drivers and crew members.

Public parking is south of the pit area, on the west side of the race track, outside the cones. Be sure to bring a hat, dark glasses, sunscreen and shade from the sun. Don't forget a camera with lots of film/memory/tapes, because you will want to remember everything you see and hear. Binoculars are also a great idea since the race vehicles are at least 1/4 mile away as they travel down the course.

The salt flats are located approximately 88 miles west of Salt Lake City, UT on I 80. The spectacular scenery and racing conditions at Bonneville make it one of the most popular areas in the world for speed.

The colors, excitement, people and smells are some of the reasons we race addicts return to the salt, year after year. Better known as "Salt Fever". CATCH IT!

The Utah Salt Flats Racing Association is NOT associated with the Southern California timing Association who DO run the Bonneville Speed Week. (known as Bonneville Nationals Incorporated)

The USFRA runs a short version of speed trials in Sept. (17th to 20th)
They DO run on the same track, but because it is only four days, mostly only local racers attend this meet.

I was just talking to Leigh on the phone today, my mate who owns and drives the Salt car I help on from down here and he is going to be there this year for a look see. I told him if posible I'll hook him up with you guys if that's Okay Lee, I'll have to tell him to go and see Cword as well.

He is a nice guy so he was interested to meet you guys as well, you have to watch him though he is a Mexican, hahaha, that's what we call folks who live in the state of Victoria.

If you can tell me before you head out what you will be up to I'll see if he is able to hook up with you.

On the subject of Salt, i saw in a magazine a guy had his car way up on stands with a sprinkler going full blast under it , to wash away the salt.

It's a popular MISCONCEPTION that power washing the underside of your daily driver after a day on the salt, is the way to remove the accumulated salt.

NO, NO, NO, NOT the way to do it!!

What happens is the pressure washers dissolves the salt, and drives the salt (solution) into every "nook and cranny." The only way to get rid of the salt after doing it that way, is to TOTALLY disassemble the car!
(which is what most racers - at least the "old hands" - do AFTER they get home)

The BEST way is the one you saw. The lawn sprinkler GENTLY dissolves the salt and rinses it away.

The only drawback to this method is, if you live in a neighborhood that your driveway drains into a city catch basin, the city water people don't take kindly to the method.
(especially if the catch basin drains directly into a city water supply)

The "salt" at Bonneville is high in POTASSIUM ** which kills small (good) organism's in the city water supply's.

** The rest of what is there is good old NaCl - table salt. The company that mines the salt at Bonneville, bags the NaCl for sale as "road salt."

The mining over the years has made the "salt" crust SO THIN that there are problems with heavier vehicles breaking through the crust.
Under the crust of salt is a HUGE lake of MUD.

One incident last year had Boyd Coddington's motor home breaking through the crust, along with THREE tow trucks!

Digger_Dave
04-12-2008, 01:11 PM
Just to add to the "Boyd Coddinton" story - where everyone got stuck in the mud after breaking through the salt crust - you came go here ...

http://www.saltflats.com/stuck.htm

and see what happens when the thin layer of salt on the top of VERY sticky mud gives way and creates an absolute mess!!

And NO, this wasn't an April Fools joke!

Unless the "saw bones" (doctor) gives me a "green light; I may not be there.
At this late a date, finding accommodations is "slim" to "nawda."
If I do get the "green light", I would probably fly to SLC, rent a car, and stay somewhere near Wendover.

Last check Wendover is full. (and has been since January!! )

Well gentlemen,
after much persuasion, beating about the head and shoulders, crying, pleading, and general govelling, GUESS WHAT!!! Some of the onion patch boys will see the rest of you on the SALT. Jerry now thinks that going to Bonneville is his idea so it's good to go. We won't be taking our cars, just a beat up old 78 Chevy "C" class. If it breaks...we get on a plane home. Just getting a reading as to who wil be there to party with. I think by this post there will be a bunch of PTP heading south RIGHT??? Details to follow...film at 11:00

Rochie,

We are for sure going in our '54 wagon and tent trailer. 55 Buick
and Ratz are maybes at this point. Originally we were going to go
down through the Alberta border area into Montana, but we have
to leave from Vancouver now. Will probably go Spokane, Lewiston and
down that way.
Put a big sign on your motorhome as to your Cdn rodder handle.!!:)

We hotel it.
After hitting the pit at sun up and spending the whole day out in the heat the air conditioning and a shower are a real treat.
There are days when we've spent up to 8 hours babysitting the car in line waiting for a run.

By crikey Mike you better be ready to rough it if you ever come down here for a play in the salt pit:) unless you stay at the homestead which is a bit of a drive away from the salt. Leigh has a shipping container there with 6 or 8 sort of beds in it but the night time festivities makes for much laughter and fun. One good thing about down here you don't have to line up for anywhere near as long as you do there and it is a casual thing when you do line up, sometimes the starter has to call you up on the P.A. because some guys don't realise they are next and can be found socialising. It is a good atmosphere and pretty casual here.

Good luck at the salt this year.

Lee, Leigh has a motor home he has hired over there and will be at the salt he has rented a American RV motor home so you can look him up.

Cheers, JT
