I was wondering what rear end was original in a 1961 Bel Air?? Its got a single trailing arm if that helps

It's the same drop in as the 55-7 chevy. 10 bolt ring gear, 8.2 in diameter not very strong

Mbog....Pardon me????
the drop in for the 55 to 64 isn't STRONG???? I hate to disagree with you BUT... I have beat on more 8.25 rears than you can count and have NEVER blown one!!! Seems to me that the ford 8 and 9 crowd have taken over the marketing avenues.
Back in 77-79 I owned a wrecking yard specializing in 55-7 chevs and pontiacs and I sold and or rebuilt those diffs every week. I personally broke a 1/2 dozen in my own cars, fortunately I had lots of spares. I used to carry a spare and tools with me LOL. The 8.2 drop ins have 3/8 RH fine thread bolts holding the ring gear and are prone to loosening off or shearing off the same as the popular car 12 bolts. They'll take a beating, but as soon as you try and "hookem" they'll snap. My $0.02
PS I don't like the 8s & 9s the driveshaft is too low. I'll build them but I don't like em....
