here's a pic of a 34 Ford 3 window built in BC in the mid 50's. It was featured in the November 58 issue of Hotrod magazine and the July? 1962 issue of Car Craft. Some people think it is the car I currently own, a yellow full fendered coupe - but it is not.

Anybody got any other pichttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/ss34coupe/3420coupe.jpgs of old hot rods to post? let's see 'em!:D

here's another - not a hot rod but a custom. A 53 Ford convert that I owned in the 70's and managed to find and buy back a couple of months ago.
Will tell the story at a later time - and thanks for the pic, Dave Giese from Kamloops!http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/ss34coupe/BlueDolphin-1.jpg

The T is m all time favourite HotRod. It had a Dodge Hemi with 3 deuces. The white roadster is actually a 32 and it was built in 1953! Notice the curved glass windshield. These guy in the Tecumseh Pushrods car club had cars that were 50 to 60 years ahead of their time.

Fred Sykes in Regina has had this one for almost 50 years. He built it when there weren't many T buckets around.

Fred's T Bucket was still in his barn when I paid him a visit in the late 80's. He had the most incredible collection of '33's imaginable..... every body style except for a cabriolet, if my memory is correct.

Court Elliot's chopped chevy custom from Vancouver in the early sixties. Last color on the car was green.

Bruce Metcalf, who we affectionately refer to as the "bald headed chicken f****".......... umm, ah ..... lover..... owned this car after Cort and had a new interior done, plus other stuff. He showed it plenty and had the trophies to prove it. He saw it last spring at the BCHRA reunion.

56 Crown Victoria I drove in the early 70's. Custom work was done when I bought the car. And it was poorly done. Sold it to finance a 55 Crown. I actually stumbled across this car a few years back in a yard full of cars, no where near where I sold it. it was stripped and chopped up, parted out, beyond repair. Stan...

here's a pic of the 34 Ford coupe in the lead post of this thread. In the 70's, the car was called the "Orange Crate" for obvious reasons, and appeared in various shows in and around Victoria. It also sat neglected by the side of a garage for many years, until the body was bought by a guy who turned it into a full-fendered rod with a small-blockhttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/ss34coupe/QM-16.gif Ford.

Here's a shot of my second Street rod. Can't seem to find any of my T bucket that my wife and I drove to the Tulsa Nats in '73. I had a bunch of 55 to 57 Chevys and Fords, some sports cars (TR3 and 67 Vette, etc. before I built the Bucket - not too many pictures of those either. The 29 Had a dropped axle, 8" Ford, 327 powerglide. etc. We drove it everywhere. One time at the Berea Ohio Hot Rod Mag nats I had 5 guys in the car and 2 giys on each running board while we drove to a neat little bar just down the road from the park. Car was down so low they had to jump off so I could make the turn out of the park!

This is the T and the A rodster that I posted earlier. These two pics never actually existed. Jeff used two or three of the photos and came up with this design. The guy's an amazing talent.

here's a couple more from Victoria's past. The rodding scene has been going strong here since the early 50's. This A roadster was a showcar that won many awards, and was owned/built by a fellow named Dave Whitehead. It had incredible detail for the time, and appeared in Hot Rod and Car Craft in the early 60's, maybe others. Sure would like to know what happened to it - what a find it would be today!http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/ss34coupe/Photo46.gif

ss coupe, the car you showed that Dave Whitehead built was actually built by Irv Ross in Duncan. The second Whitehead car was the first one with a different body. Irv used the A as a daily driver. I last saw the A roadster pickup body when it was painted red on Belmont Motors lot in Vancouver. Had a wine keg camper on the back then. They used to sell a lot of hot rods back in the early 70's. As for the Kamloops Pacers plaques, I had them copied for the BCHRA 40th reunion at Globe Foundaries in Burnaby. Ask for Robert. I was in charge of getting a lot of the old plaqes and memorabilia rounded up for the reunion.
More early Vancouver area rods. 1950's -60's
Don Smith in 1958. His grandfather bought this car new. General Jumbo wheels, hopped up A engine. Don still has this car in mint unrestored condition.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/6638.jpg

Jim McGowan's Apache. Originally built with a flattie. Jim has had this car since the early fifties. Some of you saw it on the Calgary to Langley leg of the Hot Rod Tour last summer.

Beautiful channelled and full fendered 32 2-window. It is still in this condition and I believe is on the Island.

Fred Welsh's "Treasure". This car probably won more sweepstakes trophies in the Pacific Northwest than any other show car. Quad headlites, all chrome frame and running gear, blown chevy small block and the color changed almost every year, or at least it seemed that way as Fred was constantly ungrading the car. It still exists in the Okanagan, and Fred has a nice 32 roadster these days.

Roger Melenchuck's car is the Carl Jacklin car now owned by
Gonzo Stefanko.
I went to school with Roger. Have a couple of stories about
the car.'
The photo of Fred's 40 was taken on the parking ramp in
New West, I think about 1961. I had my 51 Meteor at that
show, but boy, did I feel out of place among those "Real"
show cars.

ss34 coupe, I don't know who owns the 32 coupe. I have more pics of it. I think Barry may be right, Don Sherwin probably owned it at one time. Keith, now that I look at the car I can see it is the Jaklin car. I think I have another pic of Roger showing it. I will upload some more to my photobucket account. I took a lot of pics in the early 70's and have lots of pics of 50's and 60's rods in the Vancouver area. Pat.

Pat, that roadster that Irv Ross built, i believe is in so.california. I have a article in an older Street Rodder magazine where they did a feature on this guys collection. He was a new car dealer and he had a deuce roadster and a 3-window. The coupe i had seen in the mag. before. And the A roadster was also pictured. And there was some talk of it being from Canada. I am wondering if someone took that rpu body and built another car and that is what ended up on Belmont's lot? I wonder?!

The Orange Crate 34 coupe was built in the 50s by Darryl and Billy Foster(first canadian to race Indy 500) a very close friend of mine John Beddington bought that car in the late 70s, it had been being used as a chcken coupe, seriously!) John took my brother and another friend and went and picked it up in the back of Johns 65 Chevy biscayne staion wagon, my brother and friend had to hold onto the windshield posts to hold the body from falling off of the tailgate of the Biscayne!!
I did lots of work on the car and it came out full fendered, painted yellow by Les Plant and flamed by John, Gary Plant and Les Plant. The car was hit at a local Pub and John decided to paint it black with flames. It looks like the California Kid and is still being driven to this day up in the Whistler area.

Garry Joe's 50 ragtop. Garry is still around, but the 50 has gone missing. I last saw it in the early 70's. Beautiful Ford Jade Green Metallic color.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0023.jpg

Bernie Laughran's T roadster pickup. He built it in the fifties with a flattie. In this pic from the early 70's it was running a nailhead buick. Lots of Vancouver cars had Nailheads and Olds rockets back then. Bernie has a nice black 20's Center door T these days and a 27 T tub. His old roadster got wrecked last we heard. Fordnutz - you have an amazing collection of photos. We would all be very lucky if you put a book out on the history of hotrods in Western Canada. Thanks for your input to this thread - it was really great to learn that cars such as the Fred Welsh 40 Ford showcar are still around. Maybe somebody could get some current pics of these cars, at least the ones that are still around.

Heres a shot of Johnny Walkers El Torro. This pic was taken in the late 50s. Johnny was a master metal man and built the first full body dragster in Canada for Wilf Tucker. Car ran a blown Olds with 6x2s on top!!!
http://www.waybackgarage.com/bbs/eltoro001.jpg
Here a shot of it today with a mocked up 409 in it.
I fond the car years ago and was told i'd get first crack at buying it but it went to another guy. He has since sold it. Its still in the Valley near me.
I wanted the car cuz of the history and my dad was good friends with Johnny and used to cruise for chicks in it back in the day.

http://www.waybackgarage.com/bbs/bloodymary013.jpg
And prolly one of Canadas most famous cars.... The Bloody Mary.
This car was parked in about 1968 and was never brought back out until a few years ago. A very good friend of mine bought the car and brought it to my shop where I did a bunch of metalwork on the car, as well as some mechanical.
This car was featured in numerous big magazines, I have a few of the articles somewhere???
Murray that owns it took it home from my shop where it still had most of the show paint from the 50s, candy apple red over gold base, it had been rubbed out so much you could see gold showing thrw everywhere. I tried talkin Murray into leaving it alone and we'd try to match the fenders and other areas gooder but he wanted to spray. So he took it home and just like hes done all his life he got it ready to spray, soaked the driveway down and shot the red on it!!! Some of the goldchainers talk about how he ruined the car and should have restored it perfectly? But you know what, he owns it and he painted it and yes folks he DRIVES IT! And at least he didn't "over restore it" like so many have done lately!! He brings it out to the Invasion every year.

http://www.waybackgarage.com/bbs/bloodymary012551Apr072008.jpg
I love this shot of it, took it at my old shop. Looks kinda period eh!

Fordnutz, those pics are priceless.

The second one was and Inline Chevy or GMC - can't remember. Richard hung around the old Hi Ho restaraunt on Tecumseh near Pillete. A lot of people mistook him for Woody Allen and I believe he did some acting. Maybe as a stand in for Woody. I'm gonna need to ask him where these two went - I always like the GMC motored car best.

...Here's a "where is it now" story with a happy ending. Back in the early 80's I bought a 57 Canadian Pontiac Laurentian Convertable. The guy I bought it from was Larry Fellner of Southey, Saskatchewan. He ran the body shop there and brought the car back to life in the late 70's or so, including the red paint, interior, top, chrome etc.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n319/stashco/Stan57Pontiac.jpg
I put a lot of miles on the Pontiac over a 5 or 6 year period. Basically a solid car but needing a bit of work and a freshening up. In 1987 I was between jobs, between towns, too many projects, so I sold off the Pontiac. It went to Ontario. A couple years later I bumped into the guys son at a Manitoba Rod Run, and he assured me that the Pontiac had found a permanent home. In 2004 a mutual acquaintence of myself and the Ontario owner, sends me a picture of the Pontiac garage bound getting worked on.
Now the good part. Dig out the July 2006 issue of Canadian Classics Magazine and flip to page 48 thru 50....

Bill Traquir's Mod Rod in 1970. Won hot rod of the year at Oakland way back when. Jag rear, pearl white.

Hans Rusch's "Montego T" in 1971. He lived down the street from me in Vancouver. He lost his license in this car and it ended up in pieces. It was parted out and wound up on another frame and on the road again. The guy that rebuilt it I think still owns it.

Even more Vancouver rods. Ya think maybe Vancouver is a hotbed of hot rodding? There was and is a ton of nice cars out there and lots have been featured in magazines. Hot rodding started in Vancouver in the 40's with a club called the Vancouver Roadsters. The British Columbia Custom Car Association formed in 1952 and became a registered society in 1952. Supposedly the oldest registered club in Canada. They are still active today and own Mission Dragstip. The put on the first car show in Canada in 1952. I think they were also responsible for the first organized drag races held at Abbotsford airport in the early 50's.
Jim Winters of Langley and his high school hot rod. He still has it and is approaching 60 years old. He also reacquired his high school 32 ford 2-door from the guy he sold it to. Jim is with the Langley Loafers.

Bill Townsend's T pickup in 1970-71. Vette rear and hemi powered. Don't know what happened to this one. I sold Bill a 28 A tub a few years back that he since rebuilt into a really nice rod. He also has a nice 28 full fendered 2-door and several other cars and trucks.

Unidentified chopped and channelled A coupe. Looks to be running an olds rocket. Don't know who owned this one or if it still exists. Used to sit on Boundary road just off of Kingsway on the Vancouver side.

Forget who built this truck, but my buddy's father in law owned it at one time. It ended up with a friend's brother in Mission where I lived. I almost traded my 55 chev 2-door for it. At the time it was running a hilborn zoomie injected chev small block with a 4 speed. I think it is still in the Mission area.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0057.jpg

Al Nyberg is one old time rodders in Vancouver. He has owned this rod since the early 60's at least. Vette rear end. Sometimes it is a pickup and sometimes it is a roadster. Presently not on the road, he still has it. You can see him running around in his recently completed 40 woody. He has had it as long as the roadster.

I've been quitely on the look out for a chopped '50 ford shoebox 2 door, it resided in the kamloops/salmon arm area in the sixties, owned by Al Christopherson... story is that an older kid had it when he was growing up and the guy would pick him up once in a while and take him cruising in it. he grew up, the car disapeared. he found it laying on its side in a guys yard, aparently the former owner owed the guy some money, so he left the car as payment. he rolled it on its side so it wouldn't disapear in the night. they pushed the car back on its wheels, and al paid the guy the money. the car got build, and for some reason Al parked it in a friends yard while he went overseas to Australia, whne he returned 6 months later the car was stripped. he then took the car home, colected parts, got busy with life and kids, and carreer. I got the car off of Al in '97 along with a '50 meteor parts car and a garage full of parts. at that time, it was chopped, lowered, louvered and Al had tried to make a custome front end treatment using the bumpers and souround fromd a 55 or 56 pontiac I want to say.. I could be wrong. it looked alright, but wasnt what I liked, so I removed the smoothed and moulded fenders and installed the '50 meteor front clip. Now this is where I need the help: this car was bought and PAID for. Al was a buisness partner of my biological father in Sorrento area... I was making payments on the car, and since Al worked with "dad" I was giving the money to him, and he was relaying it to Al. once the car was paid off (or so I thought) I moved out here to alberta and told him I would be back to pick up the car. 6 weeks later, with uhaul rented I called home and told him I would be back to get my cars. "what cars?" was the response. long story shortened: his story was that he sold them, I find out later Al came and reposessed them, "dad" was pocketing the money and didnt pay Al.
Al since resold the cars, I don't blame him at all, I would have done the same thing if I was in his shoes. BUT: where is this car now? does anyone know? I would love to at least see it... its where I got my moniker or screen name from... KUSTOMSHOEBOX, as well as my love for the 49 to 51 fords.

This car is still in town, owned by a guy named Steve.
The 31 Roadster was built my friend John Beddington, called the Devils Gun. It ran a pretty healthy SBC. Was the first roadster I went for a ride in as a little kid, told my brother tight then and there I'd always own roadster when I grow up! It was also the car I cut my teeth on and gave me this sickness/ addiction! This car was sold to Midas as an "Annabelle" Give Away Car. It was in the Nanaimo area for a long time and my brothers neighbor, Terry White just bought it about 5 years ago. Good to have it owned by a neighbor once again after all these years!
http://www.waybackgarage.com/bbs/IMG0160.JPG
Here it is at its present state, totally mint! Its still sporting the 24 coats of Black Laquer that John sprayed it. Terry is tuning up a few things and it should be back out soon.

Beddington sold this car to Midas(where he worked) to finance the build of the original Orange Crate '34 coupe. Since he had found the coupe body with chickens in it.

Kustom, that explains alot. When i saw Al's car in '81 it was basicaly complete and looked good. When i saw it in the late eighties it was just a hollow, rusty hulk. Not worth the the four grand he was asking for it. Sorry about your loss, i'll keep my eyes and ears open around here.

Did someone say shoeboxes? There were a few of those back in the day. I remember Al's car. He was the first pres of the Graffitti car club. They helped me put on a run back in 76 at Fort Langley when I was the Canadian Street Rod Assoc. Rep for BC.

I don't know this car, but it was from the Island. I heard it was lost in a fire. Anyone know if it still exists?

A shoebox from the lower mainland. I think this one is still around. I saw it in a body shop in Langley several years back. This is one incarnation of the car.

From the front this time. Very distinctive with the Edsel tailites. Different paint scheme. Notice it is hardtopped and chopped.

Another shoebox from the fifties. I don't know what happened to this one.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0070.jpg

This one was taken in the 70's. B-bob had his 48 coupe at this run if I remember right. Anyone know where this one got to?
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0066.jpg

This was at Family Affair in the late 70's at Mission Raceway. I think a guy named Mooney from Kelowna owned this one. 312 for power. He had built this years before. Anyone know if he still has it?

More pics

Mike Hadden's 33-4 channelled fenderless roadster. Spike is a Hell's Angel and owns Haney Hawgs in Maple Ridge. Not sure if this body became his full fendered roadster that he now has. I will have to ask him next time we meet.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0071.jpg

Ed Loewan's 32 chopped 2-door. He has had this car since the 60's. Was the fastest street racer in Edmonton back then. Now only driven on the race track, runs I think in the 9's. He wrecked it a few years ago at the track, since rebuilt and he still owns it.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0069.jpg

Gary Lang's T roadster. This was taken in 1970. Gary was Cam Grant's partner in Pastek Duvall windshields. He is a pattern maker. He also had a rare line of Lang custom accessories, like valve covers, rear end covers, etc. These days he has a black full fendered 32 roadster.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/fordnutz/misc/scan0022.jpg

Gary's car when he redid the color and put fenders on it. The whole body lifted to access the frame. Here it is at NSRA's run in Lodi, California, winning the best engineered trophy. The independent front end was handmade as was the space tube frame. The car still exists, owned by an old Shifter Car Club member of Garys, but hasn't been seen in over 30 years.

Brian, I believe the guy that owns Gary Lang's old T is Don Haber. He was in Gary's car club, the Shifters, in the sixties. A lot of car builders came out of that club. Ed Bressler, Bruce Metcalfe, Lee Harrison, Ken Helm, Court Elliot, Gary Lang, Skip Marsh, Dave Osansky, Bill Townsend, Paul Davis and many others. I think I have a pic of your 48 coupe somewhere. I would have to look thru a box of loose pics and my albums. I was a picture taking fool in those days and really interested in the history of rodding on the coast. Don't take as many any more. Pat.

I used to drive by his house and drool at the trophies on the mantel.
Have met Cliff a couple of times over the years and he is still building
cars. A local friend of mine sez the car went to Port Alberni in the early

I had heard about this car for years, and finally tracked down the owner
and asked to visit him. He lives about 100 miles from Prince George.
He bought the car in 1953 already chopped. He leaded in the rear fenders
and installed a Packard grill. It still has port-a-wall whitewalls on it.
2 carbs on a flattie and an interior in vinyl and cloth. The leaded rear
fenders are rusting through but the chop is excellent quality. It does have
a different look at the windshield area, because they left it taller and leaned
the glass back.
All in all a great day.

And, no, it is not for sale at this time.

Pat, i remember that '41 real well. Sat at a service station in my old neighbourhood alot back when i was in my early teens. I should get over to Ross's barns and take some pic.s. But it so dark in there i don't know how well they would show up. And the cars are pretty tight together. He is selling stuff now, but nothing is cheap. And he won't sell the best stuff first. He has a few of Norm's old customs.

Keith, Norm probably wouldn't sell the 41. He has a special attachment to that car for some reason. Hard to believe because he must have owned every hot rod on the west coast at one time. Some of them he owned more than once. hahaha. "Nasty" Norm has probably chopped more cars than anyone I know on the west coast too. I try to stop in and see him when I am out there.

That '41 rag of Bob McDonald's ( Bob's Rods ) was some sweet car, if we're talking about the same Bob. Had no idea it was yours. Apparently Bob sold it to a young fellow in the Langley area, 10 or more yrs ago just before he acquired his black '57 Chev and built his '32 5w blown 406 alcohol drag car.

My buddie Ross has bought alot of his neat stuff, and at least it is inside and protected. A chopped '50 Ford coupe ,chopped '40 coupe, and a unfinished chopped '50 Merc coupe, are the first ones that come to mind. There were twelve '49/51 Mercs in his one barn alone, the last time i was there. Five coupes, five four doors and two driving converts that were done originally back in the fifty's. The converts have been gone through and freshend up and both run early Olds v/8s. He also has a couple of real nice '51/2 Caddys. One a hardtop and the other a convert. Both are mint and great drivers. Pat knows Ross and has done business with him over the years, including the '40 Merc convert he bought off him. Actually, alot of his Mercs came from Sask.

Last car was built by and belongs to Dave Boyce. He first built it in the early 50's. Still has the 52 upholstery in it. Dave owned Boyce Towing in Richmond.

I did some digging and found these pics of Brians 32 when it was first built.
I would guess this was aprox 15 yrs ago.
I forgot all about this car untill you posted the pic.
He was good friends with Danny, not sure of his last name.He was on the tour with us in the Black 34 chopped coupe with the flames.Awsome car!

In 1973 I upgraded to this 62 Laurentian with a 327 aluminium t-10 z28 intake and a set of headers A fun car that I even drove into Mexico with and went to Orange County drag strip with. I sold it in 1974. Some one bought it for thier 16 year old daughter, Two weeks later it was totaledhttp://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc167/earlj02/1962Pontiacin1973.jpg

Yes John That is Danny.
He owns the 34 and the truck in this pic of Pats.
I met him a long time ago when him and Brian were at my house to buy a 32 5wnd coupe I had for sale.
I think it was in 1988.They decided that it was too rough. They had a 77 Ford F-100 with a 327 in it,kinda cool.

here's a pic of my coupe when I got it in 1991. Have traced it back to 1970, but it was built as a chopped and channeled rod in the 50's. Has an unusual chop - 4 inches in back, and three in front. The taillights were mounted in the quarter panels in back, not the panel below the deck lid as was the more common way to do it. Sure would like to see what the car looked like when first built.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/ss34coupe/coup.jpg

Here's a little story There was this little T bucket stored under the back stairs of one of the old hotels down town Prince George. I can't remember who bought it but it landed in Davey Joes yard. Well every one had to see this old 1960's built rod and started taking turns doing a burn up and down the dirt road. It wasn't long until the rear wheel flew off, the brake drum was next and then the brake shoes. This created the photo op that you see here.http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc167/earlj02/DaveyJoesTbucket.jpg

Does anyone remember a candy red deuce hiboy that made the show circuit back in the 70s? It was supposed to have been insured with Lloyds of London and the guy had a cherry spare part for everything on the body. I saw it at a show at the CNE and in Windsor at a show in the Cleary Auditorium. I know it was in all the magazines. It' would be neat to see some pics of it.
