View Full Version : Best way to get rid of body filler

When I took the hood off to take it to Fergies for louvers, I took off all the emblems and hood supports. Then proceeded to test several types of disks to see which ones would take the paint off around the holes without removing to much metal. I plan to fill the emblem holes.

However, I came across two areas of the hood that had some body filler.
When looking underneath, yes there was some damage but it was minimal.
Some good old fashioned metal bumpin' would have removed it, however, I guess one owner used body filler to cover it up. It is not deep but does cover a large area
It was a good job.

So the question is, what is the best way to get rid of it so I
can fix the damage.
A 60 grit flap disk on a electric grinder but that is way too fast?
A bristle disk on an air powered grinder?
A Scotch pad diskon an air powered grinder?
A 36 grit disk on an air powered grinder?

many thanks for your advise.

The 60 grit flap disc will work fine, but will take some metal off when you're trying to get the last remnents of filler.Check into 3M strip it discs, sorta like a heavy duty scotch brite. They won't take off metal but will make short order of the filler.

Another question, would soda blasting help take some of the filler off?
I plan to do the hood and 'gate.

Apologies for all the questions, somewhat newish to the auto body part.

thanks for your insight Dale.

Your welcome,Brian! If you are gonna media blast, baking soda is the way to go as far as I'm concerned. Are you planning on doing the blasting yourself?Walnut shells are another path to look into.Just remember, don't concentrate the blasting too much in any one area, because this can cause warpage.

3M Strip-It Disks (http://www.shop3m.com/rail-scotchbrite-clean-and-strip-xt-disc.html) They come in black also. Made of Nylon and will not damage the metal. Kept these in mind ever since a post by Tinmann. :D

I usually go to Acklands for this kind of stuff and never have seen these in their catalogue.
Where have you been finding them?

I have been using something similar but another type of 3M Scotch Brite disk and found they get plugged up real fast.

They've got the black ones at walmart and canadian tire aswell. They come with an arbor attached that you just toss when its worn out.

I agree, awesome for getting filler off metal.

The 36 on air will do it just fine. Save you chasing down those Black or blue things.

Strip it discs are the only way to go to ensure no further warpage due to heat, work hardening due to blasting or metal removal due to abrasives.

go with the clean and strip rollocks, dont forget to get the arbour that they fit into, they work great, the purple are a bit more agressive than the black but last longer.
