What's the best paint for steel wheels? Is powder coating an option?

Powder coat would be the best way.
I have painted 8 rims now with epoxy and clear coat, one set of rims are on a truck i drove 3 winters with no rust yet. Sand blasted each rim and then laid the paint to it.

I have had them powder coated too with no problems...I also have used single stage urethane with good luck too..sandblasted them first and squirted some good PPG epoxy primer and then put urethane to them.....

The great feature about POWDER COATING wheels - especially ones with spokes - is the electrostatic charge of the process, "pulls" the coating into places painting can't do a very good job.
(and that includes the inside of the rim)

I've done about six sets of wheels and it can't be beat.

In the early years of powder coating; there was a limited range of colors, but the last time I had some specialty equipment coated, the color sample book was OVER 2000 colors with more being added.

grumper:DPowder coating is the way to go and as D.D says there is a million colors. As for the price per wheel being cheaper than doing it yourself :confused:I purchased a powder coating setup for $150.00 and a 1 litre container of color for $20.00 and that does about 50 square feet . I can powder coat anything that will fit into my oven .I used a wall oven and it works great .I have even powder coated alluminum with clear .Best thing since sliced bread.Of course you need to sandblast whatever you coat .

Thanks guys. Does coating add much material to the wheel? I'm thinking of smoothie wheels and centre caps. Would powder coating interfere with fit of the caps?
