View Full Version : Clearances for engine torque

The clearance, frame to transmission is very tight at the shifter in my 34 Chev. Manual ZF 6 speed, original master frame. I have had to do some butchering to the frame member to get the shifter in and working and now have about 1/4" clearance shifter boot to frame member on the left side when in all forward gears. Question is: how much torque movement would I be getting in the worst case and how much movement should I anticipate in just normal driving? The trans shifter has a rubber boot to protect the mechanism and this boot is tight to the frame when in reverse (shifter far right and back). Of course the trans is not in reverse enough to cause much wear on the boot but should I allow more clearance for normal driving? Engine is L98 Vette which is relatively low power and I probably will not put any more than 300 hp in the car. Right now I've reinforced the cut area in the frame with angles so the frame strength is probably better than before. I'll post some pictures in a few days if what I've tried to explain is as clear as mud.

Giday John, I would allow at least 1/2" or more if you can make the room, as 34 said if you can use Urethane mounts that would cut down on movement but might bring in some drive line vibration, I still like to use basically stock rubber mounts on road cars because they do give a smoother ride all the way through the car.

How's Ralph going I haven't heard from him in a while.

Do you still have the pics I sent Ralph to refer to for mounting the diff etc.

Isn't it a ton of fun finding new problems to overcome;)

Cheers, John
