Interesting method. I straightened my 59 Ford tailgate by using sandbending method. I filled the top tube, which was bent, with sand and packed it tight. Then put a thin block under each end of the tube and a heavy board over the bend and inched the forklift onto the heavy board.
Took out 90% of the bend and didn't crush the tailgate in doing so.
We have also bent soft aluminum tube for aircraft using sand.

GREAT LINK!!!! thanks a lot man!
Of particular note on the site are some misc. mechanical tips given....
The tip for simple removing blind bearings fitted into a closed bore housing is particularly useful to know...and I have now stashed it firmly in my mind for the future....suggest all mechanics here read up on that tip...In 40+ yrs doing mechanical work I never came across that method I may mention..wish I had known it before as many times it would have been useful..
getting back to the topic of sand bending for me that is old hat..for those that wanna do it, as author suggested DRY SAND IS A MUST...
I just wanna add that I have always used bagged sandblasting media as it is always moisture proof bagged and is a safe material to use....and packs great..
